Crazy, creative moms
I’ve been taking photos since I was a child. My first camera of my very own was a Bugs Bunny model that shot 110 film. I loved the little square prints with rounded corners. 110 was my mom’s film of choice for many years, long after most other people were using newer cameras that shot 135.
I remember being embarassed anytime she’d bust out that flat piece of plastic to start snapping shots. Even more so when the use of the flash was required. ”What the heck is that?” was the look written on people’s faces when she assembled the two rectangular objects.
However, when it came to “real” photography she did use a 35mm. I only have a couple of her shots. I wonder what happened to all the others. I wonder if they’re spread out among people like me that like to give found photos a home. I wonder if they’ve created stories to assign to the shots she took of people, places, things, and herself.
She was one-of-a-kind. Beautiful, strong, smart, fun, creative. Singer, dancer, actress, writer, photographer, seamstress. Sad, fierce, eclectic, neurotic, damaged. My antique dress form somehow reminds me of her.

I was just talking with a couple people that haven’t seen ‘Running with Scissors’. It’s a bit bizarre, a boy’s sad and funny story of having a crazy, creative mom. I’m sure there are plenty of people that can relate to at least some of its elements, no?
