Your Mama Wears [wore] Combat Boots
Just wanted to share some things I’ve come across recently. Joan Jett is coming to town this weekend. Yes, I do plan on going. She’s still cool and rockin’ after all these years. I was amazed to learn she’s going to be 50 this year.
One of the bands on her BlackHeart label is Girl In A Coma. I liked what I heard and wound up buying their album at Amazon’s MP3 downloads. You can hear their songs here. Did you know that Amazon offered that? It’s a nice alternative to the iTunes proprietary format.
Riding the retro 80s wave I also bought some Billy Idol, and Cyndi Lauper. And Dolly Parton. Don’t judge me:) I enjoy a wide variety of music. Always have. Even as a teenager I moved among very different circles of people, listening to very different types of music.
During my yard/estate sales outings this past weekend I scored some antique books and a vintage suitcase.

But I also came across a local cafe having live bands. I just wanted some iced tea. This was definitely the young set but I had my cameras with me (as I usually do) so decided to stay and shoot. This was kind of a big deal for me since I tend to shy away from crowds and photographing people.
I suppose you could classify the bands as punk/indie-rock. I don’t know, I’ve never been good at putting the proper labels on genres. Regardless, I think it’s admirable when anyone is out doing their own thing for all the world to see, it takes courage.
When I showed up I was told I couldn’t be all that bad since I was wearing a Wonder Woman t-shirt (my favorite). That day I happened to be sans Chuck Taylors (another favorite) wearing flip-flops instead. Perhaps that would have elevated my “not all that bad” status even more:) My Converse seem acceptable to most people, I’m sure my family is just grateful I have left my combat boots back in the 80s.
Everyone was very nice and tolerant of this middle-aged hausfrau, my family said they were probably expecting me to whip out some home-baked cookies from my leopard-print bag. I do make pretty tasty and wholesome baked goods. Maybe next time.
I still haven’t developed the rolls I shot that day. I hope to get at least a few good ones. I already had a roll of true BW loaded into my Rebel but it was 100 speed so I don’t know how much luck I’ll have with the dark interior shots. The other roll is still in my Vintage Hi-Matic, I don’t even know what it is in there. Then there’s a 120 roll still in my Holga.
I did take a couple Polaroid shots. This is a version of one I took of an old Fleetwood Cadillac belonging to someone at the cafe. I’ll post more once I get them done. Times like this is when I wish I had my own darkroom.

By the way, film is on the list of Obsolete Skills. There’s a whole A-Z list including things like cassette tapes, and recording music onto a tape recorder from the radio. It’s sure to make some of you feel your age as you read through them, if you’re younger you may just be baffled.
